Since receiving degrees from the University of Oklahoma and Northwestern University, Atlanta resident James “Jim” Shaw has dedicated his career to endeavors revolving around commercial real estate and private equity investments. Aside from his professional responsibilities, Jim Shaw supports several charitable organizations, including Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Each year, the Children’s Christmas Parade kicks off the holiday season in Atlanta and provides funds for the hospital.

On the second Saturday of every December since 1981, the Children’s Christmas Parade has traveled down Peachtree Street, delighting thousands of spectators. The parade features decorative floats, marching bands, and giant balloons. The highlight of the parade is the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus in their sleigh, symbolically ushering in the holiday season.

For over 25 years, the Distinguished Clown Corps has participated in the Christmas parade, bringing joy and laughter to spectators. The Clown Corps consists of a group of businessmen who exchange their suits and ties for brightly colored costumes, fuzzy wigs, and face paint, in an effort to earn money for the hospital. Over the years, executives participating in the Clown Corps have earned over $1 million for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Many families also enjoy participating in Breakfast with Santa prior to the parade. Hosted at the Four Seasons Atlanta Hotel, the breakfast features a buffet, crafts, and a personal visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus before they leave for their official parade duties.

Along with providing advanced medical care to children and teens, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta sponsors a campaign called Strong4Life. The movement is designed to conquer childhood obesity through programs that encourage everyday wellness in children and their families.

Families who become involved with the Strong4Life program gain access to resources and treatments to help facilitate the lifestyle changes necessary for better health. At the week-long Camp Strong4Life, children afflicted by weight problems find support among peers with similar struggles while participating in outdoor activities like ziplining, swimming, and healthy cooking competitions.

Children who struggle with weight issues that require medical intervention can find the tools they need to get healthy at the Strong4Life Clinic. Professionals at the clinic assist families in designing nutrition plans, assessing a child’s medical conditions, and providing mental health support.
